Introduction
'This innovative, contemporary, and well-established programme is intended for medical and allied health professionals working in clinical healthcare, including, doctors, nurses, midwives, paramedics, ACP’s, physiotherapists, radiographers, pharmacists and technicians that have work roles and/or a specialist interest in clinical simulation.
In addition to being a highly sought after method of learning and teaching, clinical simulation is increasingly being used to inform systems design and proactive risk management to improve services and enhance patient safety.
This programme will provide students with the opportunity to develop these core skills and to maximise the utility of simulation in their own practice.'
Programme Structure (PG Cert Health and Medical Simulation)
Full Time (4 months – September entry only)
Part Time (2 semesters / 8 months – September and January entry)
This programme consists of two 30 credit modules
- Health and medical Simulation: Design and Delivery (compulsory)
And either
- Medical Emergencies and Human Error OR
- Evidence-Based Practice
Please note, on successful completion of the programme, you may wish to use the PG Cert towards the MSc Health & Medical Simulation
Programme Structure – MSc Health and Medical Simulation
The programme of study follows a flexible, modular approach which offers students the opportunity to study a comprehensive range of subjects pertinent to the provision of high-quality simulation education practice. The curriculum contained within the two specialist modules includes simulation pedagogy, the design and delivery of scenarios, contemporary debriefing, planning simulation facilities, programming simulators, patient-safety, human factors and non-technical skills, clinical governance, risk management.
This programme provides both optional and compulsory access to related specialist content to broaden student’s educational expertise which is invaluable in today’s competitive workplace and brings a richness to the overall programme from an inter-professional and intra-professional perspective. The modular structure is outlined below.
An academic award of an MSc requires the student to acquire 180 credits, which will comprised of the two specialist modules, the two compulsory core modules and two of the four optional modules. Your programme of study will be agreed with your programme leader.
Compulsory Specialist modules (30 credits each)

Assessment
The module learning outcomes are assessed using a variety of assessment strategies including: written assignments, presentations, web resource design, projects and practical exams. Students are encouraged to apply coursework to their own clinical practice environments.

Pre Requisites / Entry Criteria
• A first degree in a related discipline, although applicants with evidence of equivalent professional/academic experience will be considered.
• Normally two years full time (or equivalent) experience within a relevant field of practice.
• Normally employed in a relevant area of practice whilst enrolled on the programme.
Overseas students will need to satisfy the University's English language requirement of IELTS 6.5 or above (or TOEFL equivalent). If you do not have the required level of English for entry, our academic English courses can help you to achieve this level.
References will be required to confirm specialist experience.
